Second grade students are taught phonics rules using direct, multisensory instruction. Instruction is guided by the students’ progress, but in general, second grade students review the word patterns and strategies from first grade and are taught the uncommon vowel pairs, the six syllable types, common suffixes, and strategies for reading multisyllable words. Students also work on building fluency and comprehension skills.
