Second grade students are taught phonics rules using direct, multisensory instruction. Instruction is guided by the students’ progress, but in general, second grade students review the word patterns and strategies from first grade and are taught the uncommon vowel pairs, the six syllable types, common suffixes, and strategies for reading multisyllable words. Students also work on building fluency and comprehension skills.
Each student has a reading folder. The reading folder should go home Monday through Thursday and be returned the next day. There will be practice items in the folder for students to complete. Students should do about five minutes of assigned practice with an adult. This practice should be completed with your child reading out loud while the adult follows along, monitoring accuracy. The practice items will be in the folder along with a sheet requiring the initials of a parent/guardian or otherwise responsible adult.
